On January 14, 2010, SOEA/KDP had the first meeting for the Spring 2010 school year. The meeting was over stress management. Our guest speaker was Bonnie Hammock from the OEA office in OKC. The meeting provided a free lunch, great door prizes, Intro to Teaching class information about SOEA, and a free lunch.
We had around 65 people in attendance with 3 joining SOEA and a few others taking forms home for later! The meeting allowed students to learn different ways to realize their own stress and learn that their future classroom will have stress in it as well. Through the meeting the students were able to learn that what they did to realize their stress, they can modify it for their future classroom! Plus they were able to learn that the atmosphere can be changed just by having stress in the air or a stress free environment. The students can focus and learn better in a stress free environment.
The activity that Bonnie did with the group is the following steps:
- placed candy on the tables
- soft music playing in the background
- lights on soft
- candles on candle warmers
- doing a breathing (with eyes closed) exercise for about 2 minutes
- students list their own stressors
- student A tells student B what their stressors are without any interruption
- repeat step 6 for student B.
- As a teacher need to know the symptoms of stress (physical, mental, and emotional) so that something can be down when it is needed. students knowing this information is a good thing as well.
- then yourself and students list what they do to relieve stress, when the last time it was done, then make a deal to do one of these things the next time feel stress coming.
- something that can be done is have the students rub a partner's shoulders with thumb in a circle for a minute or 2, or have students rub their own jaw and ears for a minute or two.

6thAnnual Outreach to Teach
March 5, 2010 9:00am - 5:00pm (Meet at Fairfield Inn & Suites, Edmond, OK at 8:30 a.m.) West Oak Park Elementary School
This event is part of the 2010 Student Oklahoma Education Association State Convention. Please join us as we work with the students and faculty at West Oak Park Elementary School. SOEA members will work inside and outside to beautify the school. Wear comfortable clothes. Bring lawn tools (rakes, hoes, shovels, gardening tools, etc.) and gloves! (You will receive a special SOEA Outreach to Teach T-shirt to wear!)
